I still can’t quite believe this happened to me because I’m usually pretty careful about keeping the tank topped up, but I was rushing between two appointments on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi and completely misjudged how far I had left. The gauge had been sitting low for longer than I should have allowed and somewhere along a stretch of road with very little around, the car just coasted to a stop. I had no jerry can, no one nearby I could call for a lift, and the nearest petrol station according to maps was further than I could walk in that heat. While I was figuring out what to do I came across information about an emergency fuel delivery service in Abu Dhabi which honestly I didn’t even know existed as a proper bookable thing before that afternoon. I always assumed you either had to sort it yourself or wait for a kind stranger. The fact that someone could bring fuel directly to where I was stranded felt almost too convenient but it worked out exactly as described. It got me thinking though, is this something people generally have saved as a contact before they need it or do most people only find out about it the same way I did, in a mild panic on the side of the road? Feels like the kind of thing worth knowing about in advance rather than scrambling to find when you’re already stuck.
